Sam at the age of 6 moved from the Dominican Republic to Aruba, and in 1950, he came to Curaçao to work for CPIM, later becoming part of SHELL. His sports career began in Aruba at the age of 14 when he started playing softball for some ladies from B.G. who were playing recreational softball. Around the same time, some friends in Aruba, Ruben Phillips, Big Jim, and Ramon, along with Sam, formed a baseball team called Baly-Ruth, of which he became the manager. Baly-Ruth won every game and championship during their time.
In 1950, Sam came to Curaçao and immediately made contact with local clubs, joining Unídos, a team from Penstraat where he moved to live. Aston Gumbs was the manager of Unídos, and it didn’t take long for Sam to be appointed as the manager. Unídos was not a strong team, but it was known for its motivation. Sam was the catcher and 4th batter.
With Unídos, Sam and Aston Gumbs started Unídos Jr., a club that produced many superstars. From Unídos, Sam moved to Bolívar, which later became Amstel, where he also became the manager. From Bolívar, Sam continued to Victory, which today is Royal Scorpions, and also ventured into baseball.
Sam’s softball career started around the same time he arrived in Curaçao in 1950. Alongside Aston Gumbs, he started the softball club Unídos, which lasted until 1957 when softball ended in Curaçao due to a dispute between a club and the Federation. During that time, Sam’s protégés included Rubia Hoek, Altagrasia Gittes, Amelia Riem, and Ofelina Gumbs, Aston Gumbs’ sister.
In 1962, Sam re-entered softball when Celfried Homoet sought his help to train a softball team of young players. From that moment, Sam’s home became the softball field. In 1968, Sam’s team Rising Trotters became sub-champions and from 1970 to 1974, they were champions of Curaçao. During the same period, they also became champions of the Netherlands Antilles.
In the field of youth activities, Sam, along with Juancho Josefina and Boy Jansen, started a Stimulus League that developed many of today’s players. This league lasted for 15 years, and Sam’s team Rising Trotters won the championship 10 times.

Throughout his sports career, Sam distinguished himself for his correct treatment of his players and the board. Sam doesn’t smoke or drink.
At this moment, Sam is helping the board in the technical and organizational aspects, such as marking the field, managing the bar, and handling equipment. Sam is a very honest and loyal person and is also a member of the umpire corps, having served for 25 years.
