Celsio Victor Polinet (Football)

Born on June 15, 1939.

 

Celsio Polinet was born on June 15, 1939, in Curaçao. He lived in Dòmi and Mundu Nobo and attended school for a while at Niewindt College before continuing his education at St. Thomas College both at the junior and senior levels.

 

From a young age in 1954, Polinet began playing football on the Mundu Nobo field, presenting himself as a left-winger for the Estudiantes team and later for Sithoc Jr. At a certain point, on Frater Andreas’ request, Polinet switched to playing in goal.

 

At the age of 15 years and 8 months, Polinet replaced Reintje Minguel, who had decided to focus on volleyball instead of football. In 1955, Polinet debuted with Sithoc’s first team, culminating his career with Sithoc, winning the first Curaçao championship titles in 1961 and 1962 under the coaching of Shon Haseth.

 

In this Sithoc team, including players such as Toka Beltrand, Jossy Bibiana, Ro Valerian, Carlos Regales, Ruben Cathalina, Kalulu Comenencia, Eugene Testing, Ronald Pinedo, and Ronchi CarloiI Olario, Celsio Polinet earned the nickname “onze keeper” (our goalkeeper).

 

Polinet received an invitation from the coach at the time, Don Pedro Da Cunha, to join the Curaçao national B team, where he had to compete with Ergilio Hato and Chebu Pinedo for a place in the A team. Polinet made his debut in 1956, replacing Ergilio Hato against the Brazilian team Botafogo, becoming Pedro da Cunha’s trusted goalkeeper, known as “Polinetti.”

 

Following this, Polinet continued to develop and progress as a goalkeeper, playing in over 60 international games, defending Curaçao against teams from Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Suriname, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Netherlands.

 

Internationally renowned teams that Polinet faced included Fluminense, Santos, Flamengo, Botafogo (all from Brazil), Universidad Católica (Chile), and Danubio (Uruguay). Polinet also received various offers to play football abroad, including from Mexico, Costa Rica, Schalke 04 (German team), and Denmark.

 

Key Highlights of Celsio Polinet’s Career:

 

1955: Debut with Sithoc’s first team and became one of the goalkeepers for the Curaçao national team.

1956: Replaced Ergilio Hato against Botafogo from Brazil.

1956: Goalkeeper for the youth national team (up to 18 years) in the Central American and Caribbean Championship in El Salvador, earning the nickname “el hombre elástico” (the elastic man) from the Salvadoran press.

1957: Goalkeeper for the national team in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Curaçao, finishing as runners-up to Costa Rica.

1958: Goalkeeper for the Curaçao national team on a European tour, playing in the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, and France.

1959: Goalkeeper for the Curaçao national team against Santos from Brazil, who had just become club world champions, defending his goal against Pele.

1961-1962: Curaçao champion with Sithoc under Shon Haseth.
