English Version

Iyo is a tennis player from Curaçao who gained worldwide fame on the tennis court in the 1950s and 1960s.

Iyo became interested in this sport as he watched people practice it daily on the old CSC courts at Skalo. He even made a wooden racket for himself and played with it until someone gifted him his first real racket. At the age of 13, Iyo decided to enroll in the youth championship, which he won. At the age of 15, Iyo became the senior doubles champion with his brother Ramon. At 16, Iyo won the top championship in Curaçao, the men’s singles.

Iyo held onto this title for three consecutive years. On an invitation from Venezuela, Iyo went to play a tournament there and won the Venezuelan championship. He decided to stay in Venezuela. Under the Venezuelan flag at the age of 17, Iyo participated in the Central American and Caribbean Games, winning a bronze medal. In 1953, Iyo won the top championship in Venezuela, a title he held for 13 years.

In 1961 and 1965, Iyo participated in the Bolivarian Games and became champion in both events. Under the Venezuelan flag, Iyo participated in many international tournaments, including the Oranje Bowl, where he reached the doubles final. In the South American Championship in 1958, in the final match, after a two-set advantage, Iyo suffered a knee injury. After an operation, he had to remain inactive for 2 years. In his tennis career, Iyo participated in all Grand Slam tournaments such as the Australian Open, Wimbledon, Flushing Meadows, and the French Open, always making it to the main draw. In total, Iyo played in 8 Wimbledon tournaments, and in 1961, he reached the quarterfinals, fulfilling the dream of playing on Center Court at Wimbledon, considered by most tennis players a dream. Iyo considers the year 1961 as his GREAT year in tennis.

That year, he belonged to the top 10 players in the world rankings. In 1965, he played his last Grand Slam, returning to Center Court at Wimbledon. The following year, he played his last Davis Cup for Venezuela, a tournament he played a total of 5 times. Iyo’s greatest satisfaction in sports is having had the honor of playing on Center Court at Wimbledon
