English Version
Gladwin was born on November 4th, 1944, in Curaçao.
In 1980, Gladwin entered the world of swimming by introducing his youngest child to the Buladó Swimming Club, located in Maripampun. Due to his interest in the sport, the head coach of Buladó asked him to assist with coaching the young swimmers, a role he fulfilled for four years.
In 1983, recognizing the need for representation in the official body, Buladó encouraged Gladwin and two other elders to take the course to become officials. During that time, Dutch officials played a significant role in international swimming.
In a short time, thanks to his dedication, Gladwin became one of our top referees (Wes máksimo). His first international competition was in 1986 at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships (CISC) in Curaçao.
Gladwin officiated in various competitions, including events in Aruba, the Netherlands, Bonaire, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, Jamaica, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Argentina, and Perth, Australia. These competitions included Invitationals, CISC, Confederacion Centro Americana y del Caribe de Aficcionados a la Natacion (CCCAN), Centro Americana i del Caribe (CAC), Pan American Games (PANAM), and the 8th FINA World Championships in Perth, Australia (the first Curaçaoan at a global level).
From 1993 to 2009, Gladwin served as a FINA referee (retiring at the age limit of 65). Between 1995 and 2003, he was a technical member (TC) of CCCAN for swimming. From 2011 to 2013, Gladwin served as a TC for Openwater. In 2014, CCCAN re-elected Gladwin for a 5-year term (2014-2019).
Gladwin actively participated in congresses organized by FINA in 1996 (Colorado Springs, USA), 1998 (Vancouver, Canada), 2002 (Manchester, England), and 2004 (Cancun, Mexico). In 2015, he attended the congress organized by USSA for Puerto Rico. Gladwin also participated in clinics organized by CCCAN in Aruba, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and Openwater clinics in Cuba, Jamaica, Aruba, Bahamas, and Panama.
Gladwin instructs officials for the NAZB/CZB FAK, conducting basic courses for an average of 25 officials per year in Curaçao, 15 in Aruba, and 8 in Bonaire.
Gladwin established the judging panel in Aruba in 1995 and guided them during the CISC 2000 annual event in Aruba.
He was nominated seven times (1991, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2014) for sportsmanship awards, winning four CSF FDOK awards in 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2014.
In 1995, Gladwin was nominated as the best Coordinator (swimming discipline) for Refineria Isla BV.
In 2012, Gladwin was nominated as the Guardian of the Brievengat neighborhood.
In 2015, Gladwin was nominated as an Honorary Member of the Buladó Club.
Today, Gladwin is one of our best referees in Curaçao, highly esteemed in our officiating body and among athletes. He instructs and guides new officials, contributing to the success of FAK, which now has 4 FINA referees and 2 FINA Starting Judges – a unique achievement for Curaçao.
This is Mr. Gladwin L. de Lanoi.
Regarding Gladwin’s children in swimming:
Darwin de Lanoi:
Darwin was one of Buladó’s best freestyle swimmers (50m and 100m). He participated in many international competitions, including CISC and CCCAN, representing Refineria Isla in events organized by PEDEVESA. Known as “La flecha negra,” Darwin was a swimmer who never compromised. He was Darwin A. J. de Lanoi.
Sheldon de Lanoi:
Sheldon was one of Buladó’s best breaststroke swimmers (50m and 100m). He excelled in various international competitions, including CISC, CCCAN, C.A.C., and PANAM. Despite breaking his hand eight months before an important event, Sheldon switched from breaststroke to freestyle, achieving an unusual feat of holding records in both styles simultaneously (50m freestyle, the fastest style, and 50m breaststroke, a slower style). In 1992, Sheldon became the Youth Male Athlete of the Year in Curaçao. In the CCCAN competition in 1995 in Guadalajara, Mexico, he won a silver medal in the 50m freestyle by just one hundredth of a second. Sheldon represented Refineria Isla in competitions organized by PEDEVESA, dominating in breaststroke. This was Sheldon G. de Lanoi.
