Pedro was born on December 9, 1927. His father passed away a week before Pedro was born, and his mother died when he was only 6 years old. He spent his youth in Scherpenheuvel, where he began his football career at the age of 15. His favorite team was SUBT, but when there was no place for him in SUBT, he went to play for Jong Holland, where he developed into one of our best football players. His position was defender. He was a member of the first selection that went to the Netherlands in 1950, along with Ergilio Hato, Eziquiel Vos, and Guilermo Pardo.
Due to the influence of Mordy Maduro, Pedro Matrona, and Ergilio Hato, in 1950, they went to the Netherlands where they played several games in the Dutch national team, including matches against Leeds United and Middlesex Wanderers.
Pedro played in the Netherlands for Blauw Wit and a team from The Hague. He pursued a coaching course and wanted to continue to CIOS, but during exercises, he broke his leg and returned to Curaçao.
Pedro started coaching Scherpenheuvel but didn’t become a champion. The year after he left Scherpenheuvel, they became champions under Wilhelm Canword. Pedro went on to coach Centro Dominguito and later SUBT. Since he couldn’t become a champion as a coach, he left football.
He turned to baseball and founded Marchena Braves. Later, he started with Little League and helped realize the Little League stadium. Pedro was a baseball manager, along with Clovis Lodewijks, where he was a championship leader and umpire. For a while, he was the president of CUSCA.
Mr. Matrona remembers the time when Mr. Juan Isa, the baseball president, went with him to a World Baseball Congress. Some of his colleagues in the football team were Cor Adoptie, Ergilio Hato, Gein Giribaldi, Wilhelm Canword, Ga Bernadina, Enchi Jansen, and Willis Heiliger.
As a member of our national football team, he faced teams like Atletico Jr from Colombia and Feyenoord from the Netherlands. In 1946, they played against De Volewijkers, Feyenoord, and several other teams in the Netherlands, winning 4 and losing 4 out of 9 games.
In the same year, they faced Diablos Rojos from Venezuela in Venezuela four times. In 1946, he participated in the C.A.C. in Barranquilla, Colombia, and won a bronze medal. In 1950, with the Antilles national team, he participated in the C.A.C. in Guatemala.
In 1950, Pedro Matrona, along with Ergilio Hato, went to the Netherlands to reinforce the Dutch team. In 1951, during the 30th anniversary celebration of CVB, Pedro received the trophy for the second place. In 1955, in Honduras, Curaçao achieved the second place: a bronze medal at the PANAM Games.
What Pedro Matrona remembers most is the day when Mr. Mordy Maduro invited him to attend the World Football Congress, where he saw several World Cup matches, including watching Pelé in action during the 1966 World Cup in Helsinki.
