English Version

He was born on a Saturday, August 5, 1944. The daughter of Teofilo Segundo Cuales, Entrepreneur, Violinist; and Adela Francisca Cuales-Pardo, Pianist, Administrator, and Homemaker.

She is the third of eight children in the family. They baptized her at the Holy Family Mass with the name Orlando Felipe Cuales.

Upon entering their home, a constant presence of Sports, Music, and Politics was noted. One might conclude there were eleven children, considering the mentions of Sports before the other two.

His father was a Tennis player, President of N.A.B.L.T (Netherlands Antilles Bond Lawn Tennis), and Secretary of NABLO (Netherlands Antilles Bond Physical Education, the supreme body of all sports in the entire country; the precursor to NAOC and all other supervisory organizations in our country, including FDOK.

In Piscaderaweg 3, Sports was a Daily Bread!

Tennis was the family’s sports language. Roberto, Gonzalo, Sonia, and Eva played a lot and with success. Orlando became a Junior Double champion three times. The first time with Edsel Evertsz, the second time with Boy Berenos, and the third time with Richard Trappenberg. In Puerto Rico, she represented her University in the Varsity Tennis Team.

For many years, his father was famous for his broadcasts, mainly in football, within the voice of the Dean Sports Commentator of all time, Don Hector A. Rosario. In December 1974, Orlando’s first year at Curacao, they broadcasted some softball playoff games at Rif Stadium.

But the big breakthrough came in 1975. In March of that year, Orlando called Don Aco Henriquez to request permission to broadcast the games of the new baseball season. Aco’s answer? “For the entire championship. Let’s start right away.”

Curacao presented and broadcasted the first game of the 1975 championship. Sta Rosa Indians against Blue Hawks. Yubi Mercelina and Alfred Stakleborough combined on the mound to dominate Clarence Thomas and Blue Hawks. Sta Rosa won 8 to 4. There were not even 60 people in the stands.

Two weeks later, the stadium started filling up. Before the first month ended, people had to line up from noon to make sure they got tickets for every important game. In a baseball fever, its popularity soared enormously.

Curacao became familiar with and enjoyed:

The Swing in Bashí,

Situational Pèrèmpèmpè,

Hanchi bai Pèrdè,

He got Stuck in the Wire,

Tied in Chokompé,

Throw to Second Dead-Catch,

And Throw to First Yeeeeessss!

Not just those in the stadium. Women from all walks of life gathered in groups to enjoy baseball without necessarily knowing what a shortstop is, or a sacrifice bunt, or an infield fly!

And they became acquainted “radiantly” with Wily Pieters-Mr Baseball, Poder Jozefa, Orlando-WayaLargu Nicolina, Rafi Stotzuiger, Fichi-Saad Flemming, Elvis-Piská Martis, “Pan American” Moesquit, Kabouter Gutierrez, “Line Seventeen” Balentin, “Mr. Pan” Libiana, and Last but never Least, “Beans” Elhage! Orlando invented different names for them. Not everyone! Others counted them as ballplayers. But Curacao’s broadcasts made them all known.

And naturally, there was the other international stage. In 1976, George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, visited Curacao for his other business, shipbuilding. Orlando asked, “What about broadcasting a Major League Baseball Series Live in Papiamento?” George said “YES” right away. Three weeks later, Gonzalo, Eithel, and Orlando broadcasted a weekend series live from Yankee Stadium. And it was the New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox! Chris Chambliss’s decisive home run is unforgettable.

They continued with the Dodgers at Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine, Fernando Valenzuela’s two home runs in Atlanta, Reggie Jackson’s return to Yankee Stadium, Hensley’s hits in the Sky Dome in Toronto, and many, many more.

Plus two very important moments: Hensley, who we followed throughout his journey in the Minor League until he rose, hit his first hit, and Eithel broadcasted live from Yankee Stadium, and the day Andrew signed in the Atlanta Stadium. Orlando interviewed him behind home plate, and with a serious face, he promised, “Next year, my friend!” And he kept that promise too.

And the Central American Games in Cuba, the Haarlem Baseball Week, the Pan American Games in Caracas, the Central American and Josefaso Games in Santo Domingo, and the first and only no-hit-no-run in the World Baseball Classic: Shai Martis in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What began in 1974 with Orlando, Ernest, and Daniel quickly added Gonzalo and Chicho as commentators and later tremendous narrators. Gonzalo especially excelled in Little League, and then Rafi and Cedric.

After forty-three years and more than two thousand five hundred broadcasts, we are ready for the next Playball!
