Walter Jose Maria van Rosberg stands out as one of our best Football Referees and has held administrative leadership positions in various sports organizations in our country. In his youth, Walter was a goalkeeper for “Hercules” from 1936 to 1940, and from 1941 to 1943, he played as a goalkeeper for the Schutterman team stationed in Habaai.
In 1939, Walter became a referee for the CVB, and in 1941, he officiated his first game in the A-class division, continuing until June 15, 1969. On December 6, 1945, Walter became a member of the CVB Board of Directors. In 1946, he traveled to the Netherlands with the first Antillean SOCCER delegation to visit the Netherlands as the leader of that delegation.
From 1946 to 1960, Walter served as Vice President of the CVB. On January 19, 1948, he also became Vice President of the Referee Association of the CVB (CVBS). In 1951, Walter became a FIFA Referee, receiving his FIFA badge in 1954. From 1960 to 1971, Walter was the President of the CVB. In 1962, he was honored with the Order of Orange Nassau. On March 1, 1968, Mr. Van Rosberg received FIFA’s Referee Special Award. In the General Meeting of the CVB on September 24, 1971, Mr. Van Rosberg became an honorary member of the CVB. In 1971, he was also named an Honorary Member of CVBS (Curacaosche Bond Voetbal Scheidsrechter), Curacao Football Bond, and the Netherlands Antilles Football Union.
On September 10, 1972, Mr. Van Rosberg was elected President of NAVU, replacing Mr. M. Maduro, who had retired. From 1972 to 1986, Mr. Van Rosberg also served as Vice President of NAOC.
On April 18, 1975, Mr. Van Rosberg received a merit plaque from the Island Government of Curacao. In 1978, he was promoted to Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau. On February 3, 1985, Mr. Van Rosberg received the Olympic Order of Silver from the International Olympic Committee.
On February 10, 1988, Mr. Van Rosberg was decorated as an honorary member of NAOC, and on November 4, 1988, he was named an honorary member of NAVU.
During the period when Mr. W. van Rosberg was directing football matches, he was considered the best referee that Curacao had.
Walter has attended a referee instructor course in Switzerland and has had various activities as a referee at both local and international levels.
