In the year 1946, Jan Boutmy began dedicating himself seriously to the sport of fencing. His first representation for Curaçao was in 1948 in Aruba. In 1949, during a tournament in Guatemala, Jan won his first Gold Medal in the Sabre competition. In the Central American and Caribbean Games of 1970, Jan earned a total of 8 medals (4 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze). On the national level, Jan secured 22 titles from 1951 to 1974.

 

As a fencer, Jan competed in various countries, including Cuba, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico, U.S.A, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Japan, France, Jamaica, and Panama.

 

On the administrative side, Jan co-founded “De Musketiers” in Curaçao and “Beau Geste” in Aruba in 1950. In 1969, he co-founded the Curaçaose Scherm Bond and Arubaanse Scherm Bond, serving as President of the Curaçaose Scherm Bond from 1985 to 1986. From 1978 to 1986, Jan held the position of President of the Nederlands Antilliaanse Scherm Bond. Additionally, he was the Vice-President of the Union de Esgrima Centro Americano y del Caribe from 1983 to 1991.

 

Jan became an International Referee in the Pan-American Games held in Chicago in 1959, officiating in various countries, including the U.S.A, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, the Netherlands, and Guadeloupe.

 

From 1972 to 1991, Jan was incorporated into the Technical Direction of Regional and World Games. He served as an official in the Pan-American Games in Mexico, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Caracas (Venezuela), Indianapolis (U.S.A), and Havana (Cuba). Jan also served as an official in the Olympic Games in Munich and Los Angeles.

 

In 1993, Jan was chosen as the Athlete of the Year in Curaçao. He participated in various international games, including the Bolivarian Games, Central American Games, Pan American Games, Olympic Games, and local and international championships.

 

Jan Boutmy’s involvement in different international events includes roles as a competitor, President of the Jury, Technical Director, Fencing Coach, and Official.
