English Version
Esther Etlyn Jansen, (Softball) Athlete, better known as Jèt, was born on April 22, 1951.
In 1963, Mr. Ashton Gumbs (may he rest in peace) founded the softball club Cardenales originally in the Parera neighborhood and later expanded the club with some ladies from the neighborhoods of Saliña and Steenrijk. Esther, affectionately called “Jet” by her siblings, comes from a family of athletes, with four active siblings in both baseball and softball.
Jet started playing softball in 1965 at S.B.C. Cardenales, where she had a female sibling playing. Thanks to the efforts of the late Mr. Ashton Gumbs and the assistance of coach Mr. Sonny Martina, Jet had the opportunity to develop her talent and sporting abilities, leading her to a highly successful career both in Curaçao and internationally.
Jet began playing softball in the shortstop position in 1965 and later played third base, pitcher, first base, ultimately becoming an “all-around player” in softball. She stood out for her outstanding fielding, powerful and accurate throwing, and formidable batting. Jet, with her aggressive yet cheerful playing style, became the “spark plug” of S.B.C. Cardenales, and it didn’t take long for her to become part of the national softball team of the Netherlands Antilles.
Esther “Jet” Jansen had outstanding performances in the 1971 CONCACAS Championship in Puerto Rico and the 1973 CONCACAS Championship in Valencia, Venezuela, where she was proclaimed the MVP of the tournament. She also secured the title of batting champion in both occasions. In 1976, at the CONCAS Championship in San Salvador, Jet played a crucial role in helping the Netherlands Antilles win the Gold Medal. She once again became the batting champion and had the most “two-base hits.”
Together with Aida, Esther is one of the only two players from the Netherlands Antilles to receive two “MVP Awards” from the Regional Softball Confederation. Esther Jansen achieved the title of Batting Champion in international competitions on at least three occasions.
Her sports career spanned from 1965 to 1998, during which she achieved numerous accolades, including representing Curaçao in various international championships, winning gold and silver medals, and earning recognition for her outstanding contributions to softball.
Esther officially retired from her impressive softball career in 1998 after more than 30 years of dedication to the sport. In 2002, she received a commemorative plaque on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the existence of C.S.B. In 2014, Esther was inducted into the CSOF Hall of Fame.
