English Version

Mr. Antoine Maduro had an illustrious career in sports, both as a player and an administrative leader. His career spanned several decades, starting as a footballer from 1925 until 1950, initially with the clubs Trappers and S.U.B.T. He then continued as a veteran, excelling particularly in the position of left-back.

During his time as a player, he had the opportunity to represent Curaçao in the national team, where he also served as captain. In addition to his on-field achievements, Maduro stood out as a coach, working with teams such as Trappers and S.U.B.T. He also had the privilege of coaching the national team, participating in various international tournaments between 1950 and 1953, facing teams like Finland, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

As a leader, Maduro played a crucial role as the founder of both Trappers and S.U.B.T. He also held various positions in the board of the C.V.B. (Curaçaose Voetbal Bond) from 1932 to 1946, including the roles of secretary and “kompetitieleider” (competition leader). He was instrumental in the construction of the S.U.B.T. Stadium, being one of the driving forces behind the decision to acquire the land in Kustbatterij.

It is noteworthy that, thanks to Maduro’s initiative, S.V. Trappers became the first football club in Curaçao to adopt an official regulation from the K.N.V.B. (Koninklijke Nederlands Voetbal Bond) in 1938. Additionally, he collaborated in translating the football regulation into Papiamento alongside other prominent members of the sports community on the island.

Mr. Antoine Maduro’s contribution to sports and the community did not go unnoticed, and he received several awards throughout his life, including the Emancipation Prize in 1969, the Apostolic Blessing in 1977, the Pierre Lauffer Silver Cap Award in 1982, the Person of the Year title in 1983, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Netherlands Antilles in 1984. He was also named an Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau.

The community mourned his passing on June 25, 1997, remembering his legacy and contributions to sports and society in Curaçao.
