English Version

In the year 1947, Wilhelm Canword began his sports career. At the age of 14, he made his debut in the youth team of S.U.B.T., presided over by the late Mr. Antoine Maduro. Due to a shortage of defenders in the S.U.B.T. Junior team, Wilhelm changed his position from “rechtsbuiten” to the “full back” position, which he maintained until the end of his football career in 1962.

In 1948, Wilhelm, as a reserve player, became the Champion of Curaçao with the first team of S.U.B.T., initiating a brilliant career as a footballer. In 1995, Wilhelm was part of the Antillean selection that participated in the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Throughout his career, Wilhelm was named Footballer of the Year on four occasions, and his team, S.U.B.T., set a record by winning six championships undefeated, without losing a single match, either locally or internationally. Wilhelm set a record by scoring 16 goals in a match where S.U.B.T. defeated the Jong Curaçao team with a score of 32-0.

In 1959, Wilhelm received an offer to play professional football with the N.E.C. team in the Netherlands, where he played until 1962, the year he retired as an active footballer. He then began a career as a coach after completing coaching courses in Zeist and obtaining Football Coach E and D diplomas. Wilhelm started coaching the S.U.B.T. team before working with the Scherpenheuvel team. From 1964 to 1969, Wilhelm won the Curaçao championship three times and the Antillean championship twice with the Scherpenheuvel team.

In 1970, Wilhelm was appointed coach of the Antillean National Football Team and won the Gold Medal in an international championship in Barbados. In 1974, he returned as the Technical Director of S.U.B.T. during the “Fedeprof” era, achieving either the championship or runner-up title. During this season, Wilhelm secured the championship with S.U.B.T. for five consecutive years.

In Trinidad, Wilhelm received his FIFA Football Coach Diploma. In Brazil, he obtained his Diploma as a Professional World Football Coach and a membership card in the “Sindikato di Entrenador-Atletanan di Estado di Rio di Janeiro-Brasil.” In 1975, Wilhelm was decorated with the Gold Medal in the Order of Orange Nassau by Her Majesty Queen Juliana.
