Marcel Jose Betrian began practicing the sport of weightlifting at the age of 16. He is a co-founder of the Weightlifting Association of Curaçao and the one for the Netherlands Antilles.
In various championships, such as the Central American, Pan American, and World Championships, Marcel served as the coach of the Antillean delegation and as an International Referee. Marcel was also a member of the board of the Antillean Olympic Committee for 8 years.
As the coach of the national selection of Curaçao and the Netherlands Antilles, Marcel has produced several champions at the local, Antillean, Central American, and Caribbean levels. Additionally, he achieved a Pan-American and a World record in the Press, establishing Jossy Flores in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1963.
Last year, Marcel celebrated 42 years of active involvement in sports. His occupied positions include:
Coach of the Curaçao and Netherlands Antilles Selection from 1974 to 1975.
Member of the Technical Commission for the Decoration of the Central American and Caribbean Weightlifting from 1959 to 1974.
Coach of the Netherlands Weightlifting Selection from 1977 to 1983.
Member of the Technical Commission of the Dutch Weightlifting Federation from 1977 to 1983.
Member of the Rule Commission of the Dutch Weightlifting Federation from 1977 to 1983.
