English version
Johnny Hellmund, also known as “The Legend,” began playing billiards in Antia and Aruba at the age of 7 or 8 on a carom table. By the age of 15 or 16, he transitioned to playing pool, where the objective is to sink as many balls as possible into the six pockets of the table. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled player, defeating many experienced adult players in the Pietermaai neighborhood.
In 1964, Johnny went to study in the Netherlands in the city of Groningen. During his studies, he became the champion of carom billiards in the “Het Noorden” District (Groningen, Drente, Friesland) in various disciplines such as “Libre, Tres-banda, Kader 38-2, and One-band” from 1967 to 1973.
In August 1973, Johnny returned to Curaçao after completing his studies to become a lawyer. He received an invitation from the then-president of the “Curacaose Biljart Bond,” Mr. Sansio Schob (may he rest in peace), who was aware of Johnny’s successes in the Netherlands. Johnny participated in various billiards tournaments and championships, with most events taking place at JPF and Asiento clubs.
From 1973 to 1985, Johnny practically won every carom billiards event organized. After 1985, the popularity of carom billiards declined, and pool (pocket-billiards) became extremely popular in Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, and St. Maarten.
From 1985 to 2013, Johnny dominated the sport of pool in the Dutch Caribbean in various disciplines such as 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, and straight pool, accumulating more than 70 individual titles, not counting those he won with his team “The Biesheuvel Friends” in team events.
Johnny was the first Curaçaoan to participate in a world billiards championship, starting in 1993 in Germany. He continued to represent Curaçao in subsequent years in championships in Chicago (1994), Taiwan/Japan (1995), Sweden (1996), and Taiwan again in 1998. From 2000 to 2013, Johnny participated annually in the respective Pan-American championships, held in countries such as Venezuela (2x), Colombia (2x), Aruba (2x), Guatemala, Curaçao, Panama, and finally in Bonaire in 2013. On two occasions, Johnny finished in 9th place out of a total of 64 participants in various Pan-American championships.
Johnny was nominated several times for Curaçao’s Athlete of the Year and won the title of Male Athlete of the Year in 2002.
Outside of official World and Pan-American championships, Johnny represented Curaçao in many other international tournaments held in Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Venezuela, Guadeloupe, Aruba, and Bonaire.
In addition to billiards, Johnny was actively involved in baseball as a coach and interim manager for the BBC Wildcats in the 1970s and 1980s. He also worked in various commissions for both baseball and soccer sports.
