English Version

SUBT, Jong Holland 1950-60

Shon Ma Gomez was born in Curaçao on October 4, 1933, on what he himself referred to as Beast Day. He attended primary school at Sint Jozef, where he quickly began showcasing his football talents by becoming a two-time Goalgetter Champion at the school.

Later, he attended Sint Thomas College, where he again became the Goalgetter Champion in the School Competition. Subsequently, at Sint Albertus College, he once again achieved the title of Goalgetter Champion. For the third time, he changed schools and entered the 10th grade at Zwijsencollege.

His great ambition was to one day become the coach of the Sint Albertus College school team. Shon Ma was selected to be part of the Curaçao National Team to participate in the Olympic Games in Finland in 1952. To travel to Finland, he was granted permission by Frater Serapio (Chapo) to take the 10th-grade supplementary exam.

In the Curaçao Selection, Shon Ma played matches in the Netherlands and Finland. They won against Feyenoord 1-0 and drew 3-3 against the Dutch Selection. For this match, they wore blue and white flannel jerseys.

Some well-known members of the Curaçao Selection included Ergilio Hato, Wilhelm Canword, Gein Giribaldi, Djèfi Merced, Eddy Vlinder, Corrie de Geus, Shon Mi Krips, Fefe Delanoi, and Pedro Matrona.

With the Curaçao Selection, Shon Ma made several international trips:

Costa Rica in 1953

Netherlands in 1954

Honduras in 1955, where they became sub-champions.

Shon Ma’s football career began in 1947. He applied to Jong Holland but received no response. At the age of 13, he trained with students as a junior. He vividly remembers two matches he played for Estudiantes, winning 3-0 against Estudiantes-Unidos and losing 1-0 against Veendam.

In 1948, he and other schoolmates joined S.U.B.T., showcasing spectacular performances. As a junior team center forward, he became the goal-scoring champion in 1949. In the following year, as the first team’s center forward, he again became the goal-scoring champion in 1950.

S.U.B.T. was established to accommodate the large pool of talent available, organized into S.U.B.T.-C, Junior, Reserve A-class, and the first team.

Shon Ma’s career included playing for two major clubs in Curaçao. He played for S.U.B.T. from 1948 to 1958 and later, from 1960 to 1962, for Jong Holland. In 1967, coach Wilhelm Canword asked Shon Ma to play for Skèrpènè. After much pressure and consideration, he agreed. Skèrpènè became the champions of the Antilles in 1967 and the champions of Curaçao in 1968.

Shon Ma Gomez was a remarkable footballer with exceptional talents, particularly in assisting, finishing, and dribbling. He was considered one of the best in the Caribbean, and his skills were highly appreciated during his time. Under pressure, he would reveal a team of the best players he knew:

Ergilio Hato

Pedro Matrona

Wilhelm Canword

Fèfè delanoi

Eddy Vlinder

Lovi Mercera

Gein Giribaldi

Willis Heiliger

Dafadan Jansen

Mooi Bicentini

Shon Arei Bernabela

The current state of our football fills Shon Ma with great sadness, and for the road to recovery, he recommends:

More discipline.

More focus on youth; for example, a “Youth Career” program, similar to Ajax.

Continuous selection playing friendly matches throughout the year.
