ANTONIO JOSE “PAPY” MARTINA.

Papy was born on June 23, 1947, in Curaçao.

He started playing youth football in Boka with a neighborhood team called Josef Junior and later joined the junior team of Jong Colombia. In 1965, he moved to the senior team of Jong Colombia. Under Coach Shon Haseth, his team became the champion of Curaçao. Papy played as a forward and later as a midfielder. During that time, Tony Bonifacio was the captain of Jong Colombia.

His first international tournament was in Haiti in 1966, and he later participated in the first Kingdom Games in Paramaribo, Suriname. In Jamaica, in 1968, Papy, along with Jong Colombia, became the champion of the Caribbean Zone of CONCACAF. They lost to F.A.S. from El Salvador in the CONCACAF final.

The Detroit Cougars scouted Papy to play football in the United States, but he did not go.

In 1969, Papy played professional football in Caracas, Venezuela, with the team Deportivo Portugues. The Ecuadorian team Emelec wanted to sign him, but he was not interested in leaving his family in Curaçao for an adventure in Ecuador.

As a member of our national team and the Jong Colombia team, Papy played many international games from 1966 to around 1979.

After retiring as an active player, he became a coach for Jong Colombia and served as the head coach for the youth national team that traveled to Honduras.

Papy participated in various FIFA and KNVB-sponsored courses for coaches in 1978, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1990, 1991, both in Curaçao and Trinidad.

Papy was one of the driving forces behind the ORFIC organization, led by the esteemed Hall of Famer Mr. Ibi Schoop.

With Jong Colombia, Papy became champion in: 1965, 1967, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976.

Runner-up in 1971, 1978, and 1979.

Champion of the Antilles: 1965, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1975, and 1978.

Antillean Runner-up: 1966, 1976, and 1979.

Champion of the CONCACAF Caribbean Zone in 1968 and 1979.

Runner-up in the CONCACAF Champions of Champions in 1968 and 1979.

Papy played in more than 50 international matches as a member of our national team and Jong Colombia.

Papy played football in many countries, including Aruba, Bonaire, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guyana, Suriname, Barbados, Honduras, Jamaica, and El Salvador.
